No matter our season of life and how we are adjusting to find a new normal for that season, there are standards that we need to determine to keep. Dramatic changes will come, yet for every season there will be things that press in on you and try to pull you away from your priorities. This is so important because life will always be busy. There will always be things vying for your attention and that is why we determine at every season that we will assess and reassess our priorities so that we can keep them.

Basically non-negotiables are the 5 to 7 things you personally choose to maintain during any particular season of life. For example, if you believe that your family needs to have dinner together "x" number of times per week, you set your non-negotiable and adhere to it. Only in extreme emergencies or situations do you occasionally find yourself needing to take care of a more pressing matter.

In other words, this is why they are called: non-negotiables (with rare exceptions). And remember, these are the things you pick for yourself. Along with your non-negotiables, it's always important to continually evaluate your homefront and are you there enough mentally and physically.

A rule of thumb that I use for myself as a barometer is to be able to know at any given time how much milk is the fridge. I remember the season of life when I always seemed to be in the car driving my kids. If you are at the stage of life where you are constantly in the car, you automatically know how much gas is in the car at any given time. That just goes to show you are spending a great deal of time in the car.

Are you spending an inordinate amount of time out of the house so you really don't have your thumb on the pulse of your home? Different women have different capacities and callings. But if we are wives and mothers, we have a responsibility to prioritize our life at home.

Without looking, how much milk is in your refrigerator right now? Check to see if you are right. Is this an indicator to you that you need to be home more?
