Think about the amount of stuff that is brought into your home. Other than the day you moved in, what percentage of all the weekly items collected for the home, are brought to it by Mom? If your home is like mine, I find that I, Mom, bring about 90% of the items that make their way over our threshold. It seems that every time I arrive home, I have multiple loads to carry in; dry cleaning, groceries, books, shopping bags, packages, you name it. The amount of stuff that I have brought into my home to sustain, maintain or entertain the inhabitants is mind-boggling.
After many a time of arriving home exhausted, only to find myself trying to keep the door to the house from closing securely while I try to reload and regain entry, I have learned a better way to handle this curious characteristic of a mother’s life. The lady of the house (or any lady for that matter) should not be making multiple trips to the car to unload it. Instead as I enter balancing my most fragile load, I call out my arrival with the expectation that every able-bodied person, especially “the men” whether age 5, 15, or 50 will come to my assistance. We have developed a system so that I am able to remain in the house and put things away. The youngest holds the door. If there are boxes to be broken down or items to be sorted from a grocery excursion, my helpers stick around to share the tasks. Naturally the family tends to hover when Mom comes home with a fresh supply of edibles.
Members of the family need to be “listening” for Mom and anticipating her arrival whenever she is not home, knowing that she will likely have several armloads with her. Greet her, help her, share the load. She might just bring you a treat!
