I recently read a wonderful book with my daughters called The Story of Snow by Mark Cassino. It gives a simple, clear explanation of how water vapor is drawn up into the atmosphere and under the right conditions produces snow crystals. The beautiful, high-quality pictures throughout the book are magnified hundreds of times to show the details of these crystals (see two of his photos of real snow crystals below). Each one is beautiful and unique!

This led into an important conversation about how beautiful and creative our God is, and how He uses even something the size of small speck of pepper to show His beauty and power. He didn't have to do that. No one would have known what they were missing if He had just created them as tiny round crystals rather than the star-shaped beauties that they are. But He did!!

What a great way to teach our children about how God is concerned about even the small things in our lives. He is a careful designer and a beautiful artist. He made the snowflakes just as He made each of our children with special purpose and design!

Want to show your children an up-close view of this beautiful creation? Grab some magnifying glasses and a dark sheet of construction paper during the next snow and let them see for themselves. You may also enjoy making these fun 3D snowflakes  or yummy snow ice cream with them too.

"God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ So that everyone he has made may know his work..." Job 37:5-7 (NIV)
